What is WebMCP

At Google I/O 2026 on May 19, Google introduced WebMCP. It's a proposed open web standard that lets websites offer their tools directly to AI agents in browsers. Those tools can be forms, booking systems, search functions, or anything else a visitor uses on your site.

Right now, when an AI agent visits your website, it reads the page much like a person would. It looks at the content, tries to understand the layout, and clicks through links and buttons. WebMCP changes this. It gives agents a direct, structured way to use your site's main features without the visual guesswork.

Think about your contact form. Today, an AI agent has to find the form on the page, figure out what each field is for, and fill it out. With WebMCP, your website tells the agent exactly what the form does, what information it needs, and how to submit it. The agent skips the visual steps and gets to work.

The same applies to appointment booking, quote requests, product searches, and any other action your site offers. WebMCP makes these features directly available to AI agents.

Google named Expedia, Booking.com, Shopify, Redfin, and Instacart as early testers. The experimental trial will begin in Chrome 149.

Where this stands: WebMCP is still experimental and the trial hasn't started yet. You don't need to set it up today. But Google's direction is clear: they want AI agents to interact with websites directly. Businesses that start preparing now will be ready when this becomes standard.

Why this matters for your business

Most businesses rely on some version of the same process. Someone searches for what you offer, finds your website, and takes an action. They might fill out a contact form, book an appointment, request a quote, place an order, or make a reservation. This process has been the same for 15 years.

What's changing is who does the browsing. Instead of a person clicking through your site, it might be an AI agent acting on their behalf. Someone could tell Chrome, "find me a plumber in my area and request a quote." Or "book a dinner reservation for four at an Italian restaurant near me." The AI agent handles the searching, evaluating, and form-filling.

If your contact form has fields that aren't labeled, the agent won't know how to fill them out. If an invisible element on your page covers the submit button, the agent can't click it. If your page layout shifts around while loading, the agent can't interact with your site reliably.

The agent won't call you to report a problem. It will move on to the next business in the results.

Google is already measuring this

Google also announced that Lighthouse, the tool used to score websites on speed, accessibility, and SEO, now includes an "agentic browsing" audit category. It checks whether your site's layout is stable enough for agents, whether your interactive elements are accessible, whether you have a discoverability file called llms.txt, and whether your site supports WebMCP.

This means agent readiness is now measured alongside the same metrics that web developers have been tracking for years. Google isn't treating this as a bonus feature. They're treating it as a core part of how websites are evaluated.

Auto browse: AI agents are already visiting websites

WebMCP is the future standard, but AI agents are already browsing websites today.

Google's auto browse feature in Chrome lets users hand off multi-step tasks to Google's AI. It's available on desktop now and is coming to Android in June 2026. Users can ask it to book appointments, request quotes, compare businesses, and fill out forms on their behalf.

Auto browse doesn't use WebMCP yet. It navigates your site visually, the same way a person would. That makes your website's current usability even more important. If an agent can't use your site today, it won't be able to use your tools directly tomorrow either.

The issues that trip up auto browse are common across business websites. Elements blocked by invisible overlays. Form fields without labels. Buttons that are too small to tap. Layouts that shift around after the page loads.

These problems are fixable. Most come from theme quirks, plugin conflicts, or page builder issues. They aren't fundamental to your site. They're technical debt that matters more now that machines are trying to use your website.

What your business should do now

You don't need to set up WebMCP today. Focus on making your site work well for the AI agents that are already out there. Fix the issues that make your site hard for agents to navigate and you'll also be building the foundation for WebMCP down the road.

Fix elements that are blocked or covered

This is the most common issue we find. Popular website builders create invisible elements, sticky headers, and layered sections that end up covering your buttons and links. A person might not notice because they scroll past the overlap. But an AI agent sees a blocked button and stops.

Your web developer can use the browser's built-in accessibility tools to find these overlaps. The fix is usually a small styling change. It takes minutes, not hours.

Label every form field

Every field on your contact form, booking form, or quote request needs a proper label. The label tells both screen readers and AI agents what each field expects. A field without a label is a guessing game for an agent. A labeled one is a clear instruction.

If you use a popular form plugin like WPForms, Gravity Forms, or a built-in builder tool, most fields are labeled automatically. But spam-prevention elements, hidden fields, and custom fields often get missed. It's worth a quick review.

Add structured data to your site

Structured data is information added to your website's code that tells search engines and AI systems what your business is, what you offer, and how your content is organized. It helps AI agents understand your site's purpose without reading every page.

For most businesses, that means adding markup for your organization, your location, your services, and any frequently asked questions on your site. Research shows that adding structured data can increase your chances of being cited by AI systems by over 6 percentage points. Your web developer or SEO provider can handle this.

Create an llms.txt file

An llms.txt file is a short text summary of your website. You place it at your domain's root address (like yourdomain.com/llms.txt) and it gives AI systems a quick overview of who you are, what you do, and where to find your key pages.

Google's Lighthouse agentic browsing audit now checks for this file. It takes about five minutes to create and there's no downside. Google calls it optional, but the fact that they check for it shows where things are headed.

Test your forms on a phone

Pick up your phone, go to your website, and fill out your contact form. Submit it. If anything goes wrong, an AI agent will hit the same wall.

Look for error messages, forms that don't submit, confirmation pages that don't load, and spam filters that block real submissions. In our audits across many business websites, roughly a third have form issues the owners don't know about. A plugin update breaks the spam filter. A redirect sends the confirmation to a dead page. A conflict between two tools stops the success message from appearing.

People can work around these glitches. AI agents cannot.

The Chrome 149 trial rollout. When the WebMCP trial launches, we'll test it on our own site first and share what the process looks like for a typical business website. The early testers Google listed are all large consumer platforms. The process for a 20-page business site will be different, and we'll document it.

How Google weights the agentic browsing score. As this audit category matures, its weight will shape how much attention agent readiness gets across the industry. We expect it to carry more weight over the next 12 months.

Real traffic data from AI agents. Google Analytics now has a built-in channel that tracks traffic from AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Once auto browse launches on Android in June, we'll start seeing real data on whether AI-browsed visits convert differently than human-browsed ones.
